former Petes coach among new appointees to the Order of Canada

A Lakefield woman and a former Peterborough Petes coach received appointments to the Order of Canada on Friday from Governor General David Johnston.

Mary Ferguson-Pare, of Lakefield, a member of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre hospital board and former president of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, was named a member of the Order of Canada.

Scotty Bowman — who coached the Peterborough Petes from 1958 to 1961, leading them to their first OHA championship in 1959 — was named an officer of the Order of Canada.

Bowman, of Montreal, won a record nine Stanley Cups behind the benches of the Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings and holds the record for the coach with most wins in NHL history.

Ferguson-Pare, a former president of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, retired a year ago after serving as vice-president, professional affairs and chief nurse executive at University Health Network, which comprises Toronto General, Toronto Western and Princess Margaret hospitals in downtown Toronto.

She is an associate professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Nursing and an adjunct faculty member with the Trent University and York University Schools of Nursing.

A bachelor of science in nursing graduate of the University of Toronto, she has worked in senior nursing management and executive positions in both acute care and long-term care.

She was also the vice-president, nursing services at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care and the vice-president, professional affairs, human resources and organizational development at the five-site Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre.

She has also been president of the Academy of Canadian Executive Nurses, Ontario Nurse Executives and the Association of Nurse Executives of Metropolitan Toronto.

Ferguson-Pare has previously received the Distinguished Alumni Award, University of Toronto Faculty of Nursing, the Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership, Ontario Hospital Association and the National Nursing Leadership Award, Canadian College of Healthcare Executives.

During the SARS outbreak she served as a member of the clinical advisory team for the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and was later appointed to the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health.

Ferguson-Pare and Bowman are to accept their insignia from Johnston at an Order of Canada at Rideau Hall in Ottawa at a later date.

Former prime minister Paul Martin, former eBay vice-president Jeffrey Skoll, former diplomat Robert Fowler, retired chief of defence staff Rick Hillier and broadcasters Brian Williams and Stuart McLean are among the 66 appointees.
