OHL Early Season Academic Players

Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today recognized four student athletes who have achieved outstanding success in the classroom so far this season.


Midwest Division - The early season OHL Academic Player in the Midwest Division is Defenseman Chris Bigras of the Owen Sound Attack.  Bigras, a 16-year-old native of Elmvale Ontario, was the Attacks 2nd round draft choice in 2011 and is currently a grade 11 student at West Hill Secondary School.  Chris is a very hard working individual who maintains an ‘A+’ average at school.  Chris’s teachers describe him as personable, likable, responsible and dedicated. 



West Division- The OHL Academic Player in the West Division is left winger Anthony Cortellessa of the Windsor Spitfires.  Cortellessa, a 17-year-old native of Etobicoke, Ontario, is currently a grade 12 student at St. Anne High School and has achieved an 85% average.  Anthony is considered by his Teachers to be a hard working and respectful young man who always strives for his academic best.  He has shown outstanding leadership qualities on and off the ice.  His Teachers are proud to recognize his success and wish him the best luck in the future.

 

Central Division- The OHL Academic Player in the Central Division is Defenseman Ryan Duhaime of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors.  Duhaime, a 17-year-old native of Stittsville, Ontario, is currently attending Philip Pocock High school where he carries an 81% average over all his classes.  Ryan is nominated because he has shown his effective time management skills as he continues to excel in both school and team activities throughout the early portion of the schedule.



East Division- The OHL Academic Player in the East Division is Defenseman Slater Koekkoek of the Peterborough Petes.  Koekkoek, a 17-year-old native of Mountain, Ontario, is currently a grade 12 student at Thomas A. Stewart  S.S and is attaining grades in the 80’s which is consistent with his overall effort when it comes to his academics.  Koekkoek is also currently rated 9th among OHL skaters in the NHL preliminary rankings for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.



The OHL will recognize four Academic Players of the Month for November in the coming weeks.
